[Commonplace book], [late 17th century-early 18th century].

Manuscript on paper, in a single hand, with excerpts on over 600 religious, moral, historical, and philosophical topics, alphabetically arranged by subject. Subjects include Drunkenness; Law; Martyr and Martyrdom; Mercy; Sin; Security in any Government; and Wisdom. The subject titled Principles of Substances & Things contains entries on Salt, Sulphur, Phlegm, and Earth; the subject titled Ireland includes data on acres of land, numer of rebellions, and the number of British Protestant lives lost. Excerpts are drawn from such sources as sermons, tracts, and newspapers. An excerpt under the heading "Standard of Coin," for example, was taken "out of St. James's Post, a weekly newspaper in fol. no. 489. March 10, 1717/8."
